The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) raised Signal No. 1 over several areas of Eastern and Northern Samar early Wednesday, May 13, as Tropical Storm Ambo continued to strengthen over the Philippine Sea.
In its 5 a.m. advisory, the state weather forecasting agency said Ambo now has maximum winds of 85 kilometers per hour (km/h) from the previous 65 km/h and gustiness of up to 105 km/h from the previous 80 km/h.
Winds blowing from 30 to 60 kilometers per hour with intermittent rains may be expected in at least 36 hours in Northern portion of Eastern Samar particularly the towns of Ipapad, Maslog, Arteche, San Policarpio, Oras, Dolores, Can-avid, Taft, Sulat, San Julian, and Borongan City.
PAGASA also raised tropical storm signal No. 1 over the Eastern portion of Northern Samar, in the towns of Lapinig, Gamay, Mapanas, Palapag, Laoang, Catubig, and Las Navas.
The agency warned the residents in these areas not to be complacent as the strong winds and rains brought by ‘Ambo’ will not be felt immediately in these places.
The whole Eastern Visayas region will experience today scattered light to moderate with at times heavy rains coupled with thunderstorms, the agency added.
As early as today, fisher folk and those with small sea craft were advised not to set sail into the eastern coasts of Bicol, and northern and eastern seaboards of Eastern Visayas due to rough seas.
The state weather forecasting agency also mentioned that moderate to heavy rains with thunderstorms will be experienced tomorrow at Eastern Visayas, Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, and Masbate.
Ambo was last spotted 410 kilometers east of Borongan City, Eastern Samar, with maximum sustained winds of 85 km per hour and 105 kph gusts.
It is moving northwest at 15 kph.
