Metro Manila, Cebu City and Laguna Province will move to a modified enhanced community quarantine until the May 31, while the rest of the country will have fewer restrictions, Malacañang said Tuesday.
“Modified” enhanced community quarantine will stay from May 16 to May 31 Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque said, announcing President Rodrigo Duterte’s decision following a meeting with the Inter-agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases on Monday night.
Roque said the “modified enhanced community quarantine” is different from the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in that it allows the economy to restart slowly.
By the end of March, the country’s economy had shrunk by 0.2%, the first contraction since 1998, due to a 2-month lockdown.
“Ang pinagkaiba po unti-unti nating binubuksan ang ekonomiya,” Roque said.
(The difference is that we are slowly reopening the economy.)
Under a modified lockdown, Roque said that the movement of people would be limited to essential services and would go to work. There will also be limited transport services for essential goods and services.
Select industries can operate up to a maximum capacity of 50 percent, Roque said. The industry will be announced on Wednesday.
Earlier in the day, Duterte encouraged the people to wear face masks in public places and to practice physical distance as he warned that the country could not afford another wave of diseases.
“We cannot afford a second or third wave na mangyari (to happen),” Duterte said earlier in the day, in a public address broadcast.
The Philippines tallied 11,086 infections on Monday after the first case was recorded on January 30. Which includes 726 casualties and 1,999 recoveries.
