President Rodrigo Duterte has declared May 25, 2020 (Monday) a regular holiday to observe the Eid’l Fitr, the end of the Islamic Holy Month of Ramadan.

“In order to bring the religious and cultural significance of the Eid’l Fitr to the fore of national consciousness, it is necessary to declare Monday, 25 May 2020, a regular holiday throughout the country,” copy of the document signed by Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea stated.

Eid’l Fitr marks the end of Ramadan’s fasting month for Muslims.

According to Proclamation No. 845 for the year 2020 national holidays, the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) shall notify the President’s Office of the actual date of Eid’l Fitr and Eid’l Adha on which those holidays fall.

In November 2002, former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo signed into law Republic Act No. 9177 which declared the first day of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic calendar, a national holiday for Eid’l Fitr’s observance.

RA 9177 states that “the approximate date of these Islamic holidays may be determined in accordance with the Islamic calendar (Hijra) or the lunar calendar, or upon Islamic astronomical calculations, whichever is possible or convenient.”

However, during the holiday observance, Duterte reminded the public that existing quarantine regulations still need to be followed.

“The entire Filipino nation must have the full opportunity to join their Muslim brothers and sisters in peace and harmony in the observance and celebration of Eid’l Fitr, subject to existing community quarantine and social distancing measures,” the proclamation read.

According to official statistics, Muslims make up about 6% of Philippines 100 million citizens, where 8 in 10 are Catholic.
