The 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup is scheduled to run from 25 August to 10 September 2023, FIBA reported on Monday.

The 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup will see the group phase taking place in Indonesia, Japan and the Philippines, with the final phase to follow in Manila, Philippines.  It marks the first in the history of the competition to be held in over one country.

The decision by FIBA was a welcome move for a nation already dealing with the coronavirus pandemic.

“This is certainly positive news as it is something to look forward to amidst the difficult situation that the entire world is facing right now. Rest assured SBP officials will work hand in hand even with the limitations of the times to guarantee that our co-hosting of the tournament will be something that Filipino basketball fans will remember and will be proud of,” said Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) President Al S. Panlilio in an official statement.

The development marks, for the very first time since 1978, the return of prestigious competition to the country.

The FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 will feature 32 teams from all over the world, with the extended format introduced in China for the 2019 FIBA Basketball World cup.
